Ethical Recycling

[extra_wrap custom_class=”block_1″]
pic_1It is estimated by the US Environment Protection Agency that nearly 70% of all end-of-life electronics are never recycled and wind up in our nation’s landfills. Many of these devices contain heavy metals such as beryllium, mercury, cadmium, and lead which can prove toxic to our natural environment. Equally as important, these devices are comprised of steel, aluminum, copper, plastic, and glass which can be recovered and used in the manufacture of new products with much less of an environmental impact than mining virgin materials.

If it has a power cord or a battery, chances are it can be recycled. We accept a broad range of computing equipment, telephones, electronic devices and related components and refurbish them for re-use or dismantle them so that they can be used to manufacture new products. Today, over 98% of every pound of material that we receive is turned into re-usable products.

We ensure that the electronic devices are handled in accordance with all federal, state, and local regulations and are processed here in the United States.

Re-Use, Repair or Recycle

Because the needs of customers can vary, we offer a choice of options so that the right solution is delivered.  Each order is processed as a discrete lot to ensure that it is safely handled consistent with the specifications of our customer.  Depending on the material and the customer’s needs, the materials may be:

  • Dismantled to prevent inappropriate use and then recycled into raw materials; or
  • Tested and repaired for re-use by individuals and charitable organizations; or
  • Recycled into component materials that can be used to manufacture new products.

Where Does It All Go?

More than 98% of all the material passing through our doors is diverted from landfills and finds a new use.  Sometimes it is a family in need of a low-cost computing solution.  Other times, it may be a manufacturer who can turn scrap plastics into new products.  The remaining 2% consists of particle board and non-toxic solid waste for which there is not a viable recycling option.

Electronic scrap or “e-waste” can contain some harmful materials such as beryllium, cadmium, lead and mercury.  If not properly handled and processed, they could prove toxic to our employees and the environment.  In some cases, we rely on secondary processors and refiners to perform highly specialized material recovery.

Consistent with our belief in ethical recycling, we adhere to the Basel Convention on the Control of Trans-boundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal and do NOT export hazardous materials to foreign markets.   Hazardous materials that are recovered from e-waste are processed domestically in accordance with federal, state, and local regulations.
